Being able to practice at home can really accelerate your learning. But it doesn't need to cost the earth!
Affordable keyboards can be bought from £50 used, or new for around £100, and they have a great sound. Many digital keyboards have a headphone socket, so you can practice quietly.
Initially, a 61-key piano will keep you going for a few years, and then move onto to an 88-key piano with weighted keys.

We never put kids under any pressure to work towards an exam. But when your tutor feels you are ready, you may want to consider taking a piano exam. Grade 1 exams consist of three pieces, chosen by the candidate from the appropriate lists in the current syllabus, scales and broken chords, sight-reading and aural tests.
Total marks in all individual Practical exams are 150. 100 marks are required to achieve Pass, 120 marks to pass with Merit and 130 marks to pass with Distinction. www.ABRSM.org.
